I was driving home from Orange County on Friday, and decided to take the 101 since the traffic on 5 was nuts. So I put SL&RR in my CD player and listened to "Highway 101" thinking it would be the perfect song to listen to at that moment. It was great...the sun was going down, the surfers were trotting towards the beach to catch some waves while they still had time, the smell of the ocean coming in my car window, you get the idea. I really wished my Mustang was a convertible right then! I just have to say that Mike captured the "California vibe" perfectly when he wrote that song.

Just thought I'd share that.....

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial">Michelle, I'm thousands of miles away from California and yet...when I'm driving home either late at night or early morning and Highway 101 comes on in my car CD player...it just strikes a chord...it's one of those road tunes that sends a shiver down your spine and puts you in a driving mood.
"Gotta pocket full of memories..."
"Listen to the boulevard..."
"Gonna leave this world behind..."
Classic stuff...one of my favorite songs on SL&R'n'R....

That sounds wonderful, I wish I had a beach to drive down along. Instead I get traffic jam I5, but I can image what it would be like! It is one of many great songs!

You know, I don't like Highway 101 that much. I skip over that song every time. its just as boring for me to play as it is to listen to. I play dont take me for granted, footprints on my ceiling, and wasnt born to follow enough to make up for it. The only song I dislike (notice i didnt say hate?) more than 101 is Live before you die.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial">For me it's the exact opposite. I love playing Highway 101 and I'm bored with Don't Take Me For Granted. The only songs I really go out of my way to listen to on SLRR are Reach For the Sky, Highway 101 and Angel's Wings. Everything on the album I can go either way with. Except Nickels and Dime... I just can't get into that song.

I am about 1500 miles away from Highway 101, but spent 25 years traveling up and down that highway. Mike did capture SoCal so well in that song. I can close my eyes and smell the beach...sounds corny, just feeling a little homesick about now

Hey Michelle!
As I was driving home from that Social D gig in Bielefeld on Tuesday morning (around 3 a.m.) I had the SL&RnR CD on in my car and when it dawned I could see the early morning fog hovering over the fields at the side of the "Autobahn" and the song that was playing at that moment was "Highway 101"!
For some reason I had to think of you and what you said about that song!
"Highway 101" not only captures a California vibe but it also has, although its imagery is deeply rooted in the Cali culture, a universal appeal.

That's so true!
"Highway 101" is a great song that reminds me "on the good times and the bad"..so fuckin true!

I mean, everybody drove a lot of miles with girlfriends and ex-girlfriends, so we got a lot of dreams and memories..know what I mean?
I love the song for reminding me.. so, it doesn't matter if you live in Cali or not..

Michelle, I thought you lived in San Diego right? I was wondering because you said you were driving home from Orange County and you took the 101. Did you move? The 101 stops in LA.
